Eat a Colorful Diet - Part 5 (Blue and Purple) PDF Print E-mail

Consuming a wide arrangement of fruits and vegetables will provide all the vitamins and minerals to keep you happy and healthy. We spoke last time about the power of red colored fruit and vegetables.

Blue and Purple colored fruits and vegetables contain two disease fighting phytochemicals. These powerful antioxidants help reduce the risk of disease including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and may even slow the aging process. Memory loss occurs after age 50 for most people, and eating berries like blueberries, blackberries may help to reverse this trend.

Blueberries and black berries are great to mix in yogurt or oatmeal; they can even be eaten by themselves for a healthy and filling snack. I prefer getting plain/vanilla yogurt and mixing in my own blueberries and blackberries. If you get yogurt such as fruit on the bottom, you will be looking a large amount of sugar that is not from the fruit. I saw recently a yogurt with 26 grams of sugar. This equals about 6.2 teaspoons of sugar!

If you are daring enough you should try to create you own blueberry/blackberry smoothie!
