Health and Wellness Challenge: Pass on the Salt! PDF Print E-mail

One of the potential blockers to Health and Wellness is Salt! It is easily over consumed due to the fact that it is usually already in the food we eat.

When it rains it pours!

SALT

If you examine the nutritional labeling on most products that you purchase, you might be surprised to find out that salt is found in a variety of products including cookies, breads and some beverages. Most of these foods are known as processed foods. The National Academy of Sciences recommends consuming a minimum daily intake of salt of 500mg. Salt is a necessary nutrient and your body needs a certain amount daily. It’s recommended that a typical adult not exceed 2,400mg daily. Unfortunately, many people are consuming as much as 6,000mg daily, which overtime will cause harm to your body.

Are you one of those people who reach for the saltshaker before you even taste the food? This is one habit that you will need to break. High blood pressure is a real problem for many African-Americans and the culprit maybe salt. More than 1/3 of the Adult African- American population suffers from high blood pressure. Excessive salt consumption also contributes to other health concerns like asthma, kidney stones, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Too much salt in your diet diminishes absorption of important nutrients like calcium resulting in weakened bones, nerve damage and potentially heart problems.

If you are trying to reduce your salt intake levels and are having difficulty, here are two helpful suggestions:

1. Eat more potassium-rich foods like Collards, Pinto Beans, Bananas, grains and fruits. Potassium lowers your blood pressure.
2. Read nutritional labels on all food products prior to purchasing them. In many cases there are lower sodium alternatives available.

Health and Wellness Challenge: Sugar Buzz PDF Print E-mail

Our final food that we will look at that is consistently abused is sugar. Sweetness and saltiness are both flavors that it is human nature to crave. Yet, both of these should be consumed in moderation, if not your goal of wellness will be extremely difficult to reach.

SUGAR

Sugar is addictive! Our bodies need sugar to supply energy. Most of us experience an over abundance of sugar from processed foods. Whole foods like fruit and vegetables contain a complex sugar (fructose) but the sugar is balanced with other minerals. This is not the case with highly processed foods.
We warned you sugar could be addictive.

Refined sugar causes most of the problem with sugar overload. The human body’s natural state of being is interrupted because so many of the foods we eat are made with refined sugar instead of natural sugar. Refined sugars move rapidly in the bloodstream and often cause shock to the pancreas. When this happens, calcium is lost and the result is internal pain and bone problems. If that wasn’t enough your body’s blood sugar level is in a state of imbalance causing you to crave even more sugar.

The 3 pm crash is NOT normal! Maybe it was that morning donut or the bowl of sugar-filled cereal.

Refined sugar may give you a burst of energy, but over consumption of refined sugar over time causes disease to develop. Sugar is a huge contributor to overweight, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases and tooth decay. There are a number of sugar substitutes on the market. Some even taste like sugar. Be careful which you choose. One that you want to avoid is High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFCS). If you have a “Sweet Tooth” and want to satisfy your craving try the following suggestions because some of the sugar substitutes actually feed your craving instead of stemming it:

  • Curb your sugar craving by eating perfectly balanced whole fruits. Look for fruits that are in season. Seasonal fruits are usually sweeter and want require that you add any sugar for enjoyment.
  • Some people use brown sugar in place of refined white sugar. Don’t make this mistake! The impact of eating brown sugar is similar to that of refined white sugar.
  • Honey is a natural sweetener, but it’s refined by bees. Honey actually has more calories than white sugar. Honey has about 60 calories per tablespoon!

After these last few blog postings I hope we have made it easier for you to avoid abusing these food products. Remember when in doubt read the ingredients first then the food label! Also, if your great-great grandmother would not recognize the product or ingredients then it may be better to move along to an alternative. Tell us how your wellness journey is going, we would love to know!

Health and Wellness Challenge: Who Do You Trust More the Cows or the Chemists? PDF Print E-mail

One product that is abused constantly is margarine. A few years ago this product was considered a healthy alternative to butter. As Joan Dye Gussow stated, “As for butter and margarine, I trust the cows more then I trust the chemist.” Along with this quote I will present you a tip that I use constantly, avoid food products that ingredients are unfamiliar, unpronounceable and/or not recognizable by your great-great grandmother! Let’s look a little deeper into the product of margarine.

Who do you trust more?

MARGARINE:

Margarine was created because people were concerned that butter (high in saturated fat and high in cholesterol) might contribute to heart disease and stroke. Recent studies suggest that users of polyunsaturated vegetable oils like most margarine might be at perhaps a greater risk of having a heart attack.

Margarine contains hydrogenated polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Hydrogenation creates a synthetic fat that has proven harmful to the human immune system. Further, this process has proven a contributor to elevating blood cholesterol. READ THOSE NUTRITIONAL LABELS! Read your ingredient listing to determine if hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils are listed. Margarine, butter or vegetable oils without either of these ingredients are most likely better for you. Butter should be preferred over most margarine and should be used in moderation given the high fat content

Look for partially hydrogenated oils, these are TRANS FAT in disguise.

Health and Wellness Challenge: Moderation PDF Print E-mail

Sir the road to Health and Wellness is not that confusing, we are here to help!

Health and Wellness are simple words to pronounce, but achieving both requires hard work, determination and of course discipline. Many

products and ingredients that are consumed with very little thought may present you with some severe health challenges if you aren’t careful.

There are three items that can be found in most kitchens that are potentially blockers to Health and Wellness. They are not necessarily harmful if you consume them in moderation, but they can cause major health problems if abused. “Food Abuse” is the term that describes excessive intake and consumption of food ingredients. Over the next few blogs we will identify these three ingredients and lend you some tips to reduce the likelihood of food abuse.

Remember Everything in Moderation!

Eat a Colorful Diet - Part 5 (Blue and Purple) PDF Print E-mail

Consuming a wide arrangement of fruits and vegetables will provide all the vitamins and minerals to keep you happy and healthy. We spoke last time about the power of red colored fruit and vegetables.

Blue and Purple colored fruits and vegetables contain two disease fighting phytochemicals. These powerful antioxidants help reduce the risk of disease including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and may even slow the aging process. Memory loss occurs after age 50 for most people, and eating berries like blueberries, blackberries may help to reverse this trend.

Blueberries and black berries are great to mix in yogurt or oatmeal; they can even be eaten by themselves for a healthy and filling snack. I prefer getting plain/vanilla yogurt and mixing in my own blueberries and blackberries. If you get yogurt such as fruit on the bottom, you will be looking a large amount of sugar that is not from the fruit. I saw recently a yogurt with 26 grams of sugar. This equals about 6.2 teaspoons of sugar!

If you are daring enough you should try to create you own blueberry/blackberry smoothie!

Eat a Colorful Diet - Part 4 (White) PDF Print E-mail

Your journey of wellness has begun!

White Colored Produce like onions, leeks and garlic may be lacking in color by they contain a powerful

Unless your idea of wellness is 787 calories and 10.9 grams of saturated fat!

nutrient called allicin. Allicin may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and increase the body’s ability to fight infection. Nutrition research shows that eating vegetables from the onion family may speed recovery from colds, reduce the risk of heart attacks, and may even stop the spread of certain cancers, particularly stomach and colon cancer.

A great idea to incorporate onions is of course a deluxe salad. Yet, some other ideas are to create your own salsa, or to add them into your homemade chili! Garlic can also be incorporated into many meals as well. Leave us a comment below to tell us your favorite ways to use these produce items. Or tell us if you have tried something new!

Eat a Colorful Diet - Part 3 (Dark Green) PDF Print E-mail

Many individuals in America do not get enough servings of fruits and vegetables per day. So we challenge you all to try and eat 1 serving of fruits and/or vegetables with each meal! We have been showing you the influence that fruits and vegetables can have on your life. Next up is the granddaddy of them all, Dark Colored Greens!

Dark Green Colored Vegetables such as collards, turnip greens, kale, and spinach should be eaten every day.

People said that cartoons are a bad influence. Are they?

These nutritional powerhouses are loaded with Lutien (pronounced LOO-ten), which is an antioxidant that helps reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Other green veggies like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli help protect against breast cancer (which affects on out of every eight U.S. women) and prostate cancer (Which affects one out of every six men in the U.S.)

Sure everyone knows that you can consume your dark green colored vegetables by having a salad. Why not try and spice up the salad with Wiley’s Green Seasoning. You can also add fruits (i.e. apples), vegetables (i.e. tomato, to get lycopene) and even nuts (i.e. almonds/cashews, to get healthy fats). You can even add some lean protein to your salad such as a hard boiled egg, diced skinless chicken breast, or even sliced salmon. The ingredients are endless.
