A Movement to Motivate Americans to Understand the Importance of Wellness

Viewing Wellness only as physical well being is to limit the power that Wellness brings to life. The People of Wellness (POW) Foundation aims to provide a glimpse of what a Wellness lifestyle looks like lived out. Central to the lifestyle aspect of Wellness is the recognition and adoption of a Wellness attitude. Combined, these two components drive the action required to fully experience Wellness at its core. The idea of being well, living well and processing well isn’t exhaustive but rather is integrative. It’s evolving and changing continuously. Thus, choosing Wellness as your preference is a conscious decision that’s reached daily.

Achievement and excellence are the two barometers by which Wellness stretches and elevates to levels hardly imaginable. POW focuses Wellness attainment into 5 defined dimensions that provide a framework for goal accomplishment through individual choice.

• Everyone is equipped with talent and ability that is God given. Finding and utilizing your unique gifts opens the door to discovery and excellence. These gifts may not be obvious, but will be uncovered if sought.
  
  
• The human body must be cared for. Much can be accomplished if properly nurtured and powered with fuel (good food, water and rest) to maximize output.
  
  
• To perform at peak, the environment (indoors and outdoors) must provide the setting whereby energy exerted yields energy developed.
  
  
• The mind and the soul must be fed spiritual food. Discovery isn’t grown or harvested. It’s found!
  
  
• Isolation is not Wellness. A Wellness Seeker needs social support and the back and forth exchange of ideas where your growth results from listening.

The following examples are illustrative of how each of these 5 Wellness dimensions can be expressed:

Dimension #1 (Talent and Ability): There are those who have natural athletic talent and ability. This talent combined with a skill like patience can go far in assisting others who may not excel with this particular skill set to reach a level of physical action and mobility over and beyond their own expectations. Both the trainer and the one being trained are experiencing Wellness because one is utilizing his talents and skills to the fullest while the trainee develops and attitude fueled by excelling.

Dimension #2 (Physical Fitness): Attractiveness, bulging muscles or looking great in a pair of jeans are not necessarily attributes of a physical fit person. We now know that a simple 30 minute walk can be the foundation for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease which is the leading cause of death for adults in the U.S. A daily physical activity like walking encourages Wellness enhancing benefits like stress reduction, controlling weight, aerobic endurance, and overall improvements in well being. Walking is something that most people can do and is a great start for strength conditioning which promotes Wellness.

Dimension #3 (Environment): To excel at anything your environment should reflect your goals. Having your surroundings commensurate with achievement will yield the results you’re looking for. This includes surrounding yourself with others who have similar aspirations and dreams.

Dimension #4 (Mind and Soul): Allow yourself time to think. Too many of us act before we think which often leads to unnecessary mistakes.

Dimension #5 (Don’t be an Island): The Wellness journey is not a trip that you travel alone. Wellness by definition is interactive with your world to achieve balance.
